Ringu by Hideo Nakata (Review)

Ringu - Hideo Nakata

I finished watching Ringu (the Japanese original that The Ring was based on) earlier this afternoon, and well, I feel a bit underwhelmed. It was nowhere near as scary as I thought it would be, though there were definitely some creepy moments. It’s nice to see a horror movie that doesn’t try to scare the bejeezers out of you with sudden bumps, but rather piles on the atmosphere.

Still, it would’ve been nice to have at least one or two solid scares, just to let off some of the tension that kept building up. The last 15 – 20 minutes did contain some nice (if convenient) twists, especially the last scene which leaves an unsettling taste in the mouth.

I haven’t seen the American version of The Ring yet, so it’ll be interesting to see how the two compare. And I still need to see Dark Water, which has been sitting on my shelf for the past few weeks and yet still hasn’t made it into my DVD player for some reason.
