Video Premier: “Night Soughing” by Karen Vogt (Dir. Jolanda Moletta)

Directed by Jolanda Moletta, the moody video is for Karen Vogt’s ocean-inspired Losing the Sea EP.

Earlier this year, Karen Vogt released Losing the Sea, a collection of six moody ambient pieces inspired by her own longing for the ocean. She writes:

Growing up in Australia, the sea was always in close proximity and within walking distance of most places I lived. I have been based in Paris for the past fifteen years and it was only recently that I realised how much I feel a sense of loss that the sea is so far away from me now. Each time I go for a trip to the ocean, I want to stay there. I want to sit on the shore and watch the water, the waves, and the sky.

“Night Soughing” is the EP’s third track, and features Vogt’s wordless vocals sighing and drifting over shimmering guitar textures. They served as inspiration for Jolanda Moletta’s minimalist video, which blends beautiful ocean footage from northern Italy with Stefania Lubatti’s equally lovely painting. The result is a dreamlike montage.

This isn’t the first time that Vogt and Moletta have worked together. In addition to being a director, Moletta is a musician in her own right, and contributed vocals to The Sweet Wait, Vogt’s 2021 collaboration with Spanish composer Pepo Galán. Moletta also performs with Demian Endian as She Owl.

Karen Vogt’s own catalog spans more than twenty years, beginning with her work in the dreampop outfit Heligoland and on to numerous ambient and experimental albums on labels such as Superpang, Mare Nostrum, Ambientologist, Editions Furioso, and Stellar Frequencies.
