Steven Spielberg + Will Smith = OldBoy?

An English-language remake of Park Chan-Wook’s OldBoy had been announced a few years ago — with Nic Cage supposedly taking the lead role — but it had sort of petered out. But now, the remake is apparently back from the dead, with even bigger names behind it: Steven Spielberg and Will Smith. Now, I like both Spielberg and Smith quite a bit, but I have a hard time believing that they’ll be willing to delve deep enough into the darkness to make something as powerful as the original.

Of course, some might have said the same thing prior to Munich, but even so… this just feels wrong. As do most English remakes of cult Asian films. And I can’t help but wonder what still-living critter Smith might be consuming in the remake.
