The Spice Continues to Flow in the First Trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two

The second Dune movie looks to be just as intense and epic as its 2021 predecessor.

2021’s Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) was an unqualified success, filled with stunning far-future visuals and powerful performances from Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Stellan Skarsgård. But it told only part of the story, ending with young Paul Atreides (Chalamet) heading into the deserts of Arrakis after the villainous House Harkonnen attacks his family and kills his father.

Dune: Part Two continues the story of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, with Paul and his mother finding refuge amongst the Fremen, a race of fearsome warriors who make the Arrakis desert their home. As seen in the trailer, the second Dune movie looks to be just as epic as its predecessor, if not more so. New factions come into play, namely Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) and the deadly Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), even as Paul is confronted with a horrible destiny that he sees in his visions.

And of course, he finally gets to ride a giant sandworm. (Linda Codega has a breakdown of every detail in the trailer.)

Dune: Part Two arrives in theaters on November 3, 2023. Villeneuve may end up making a trilogy of Dune films with an adaptation of 1969’s Dune Messiah. Beyond that, he’s also planning to adapt another iconic sci-fi novel, Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama.
