So maybe Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop will actually be good after all?!

Netflix’s adaptation of the classic anime series gets a fun, stylish teaser with just the right vibe.

To say that I’ve been skeptical concerning Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the Cowboy Bebop anime series would be an understatement. Not only are there the usual concerns that are inherent to adapting animation to live-action, but this is Cowboy freakin’ Bebop we’re talking about here, one of the most stylish, beloved, and acclaimed anime series of all time.

But if this teaser trailer is any indication, then it looks like Netflix has possibly, maybe, conceivably nailed it. The teaser features the series’ three leads — Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) — getting into various scraps as they pursue their latest bounty. The trailer has the exact sort of vibe that you’d want from anything Cowboy Bebop-related, thanks to the characters’ snipes and snark, Spike’s Bruce Lee-isms, Yoko Kanno’s music, and even some hints of the series’ underlying darkness and tragedy.

So sure, mark me down as cautiously optimistic. It’s clear that this adaptation is coming from a place of love for Shinichirō Watanabe’s original anime, and hopefully that will prove enough.

Cowboy Bebop begins streaming on Netflix on November 19.
