Ride’s Nowhere Gets a Two-Disc Reissue From Rhino Records
When it comes to discussing shoegazer music, I realize I probably spend an inordinate amount of time writing about Slowdive; in my defense, though, they are my favorite band of all time. However, I’d be sorely remiss if I never wrote about Ride, their Oxford comrades-in-arms, and specifically, Ride’s 1990 debut Nowhere.
Nowhere is as much a shoegaze classic as, say, Just For A Day or My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. But whereas those albums bliss you out with gossamer guitars and ethereal vocals, Nowhere is — as the title implies — full of existential longing and dread that pummels you via the band’s propulsive, jangly sound, imploring vocals, and despondent lyrics. In other words, it’s a coolly exhilarating listen, the shoegaze equivalent of cold water in the face or a chilly winter breeze. And on December 21, in honor of the album’s 20th anniversary, it’ll be reissued by Rhino as a double-disc set.
The first disc will include a remastered version of the album and 1991’s Today Forever EP. The second disc will include a previously unreleased concert recording from 1991. The hardback book-like packaging will include a 40-page booklet containing rare photos and an essay by Jim DeRogatis, who has also written biographies of The Flaming Lips and music critic Lester Bangs.
