Return to the Danger Zone with the First Top Gun: Maverick Trailer

I feel the need… the need to watch this trailer many more times until the movie finally arrives in theaters next June.

One of my fondest childhood memories is of my dad pulling me out of school unexpectedly and taking me to see Top Gun in the theatre. I was a huge military aircraft buff at the time, and watching F-14 Tomcats on the silver screen was exhilarating. As such, I can’t help but be excited for Top Gun: Maverick, and the movie’s first trailer does not disappoint at all.

Very few plot details are divulged, other than that Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) hasn’t progressed up the Navy’s ranks like he should’ve given his accomplishments, but is still “stuck” being a pilot — something that seems to suit him just fine. Instead, you get a collage of random shots, with the most important being several awesome-looking images of jets, jets, and more jets, including a final one of an F-14 Tomcat tearing through the clouds. Oh, and a few notes from the classic Top Gun theme, which had me smiling for a long time.

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Cruise, Miles Teller (as the son of Goose), Val Kilmer (as Iceman), Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris. No word yet on whether or not Cruise learned to fly actual jets in order to perform his own stunts. I suppose we’ll learn more — including details about techniques used to film the movie’s “mind-blowing” footage — as we get closer to the movie’s June 26, 2020 release date.
