“Outer Otherness” by Rocketship

One of Dusty Reske’s best songs is also one of his catchiest and grooviest to date.

Dusty Reske may not be terribly prolific; his band Rocketship has only released four albums in 23 years and Thanks to You is his first one in over a decade. But Rocketship still deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Stereolab. Reske’s delightfully skewed music walks the line between twee pop, experimental and electronic music, and shoegaze with aplomb. Case in point: “Outer Otherness,” an absolute corker of a song that builds on an irresistible groove with cascades of synth and string arrangements while Ellen Osborn’s heavenly voice soars high overhead. Expect to see this one on my year-end list.
