One Man’s Trash

Throughout 2003, this guy will be offering a daily MP3 taken from his collection of obscure recordings, mixtapes, and thrift store discoveries. I’ve sampled a few of them, and right now, I’m really digging The Space Lady’s cover of “Major Tom”. Recorded in 1990 (I think), it practically outdoes everything associated with “electroclash,” and on a Casio keyboard no less.

Stuff like this fascinates me, though I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s akin to poking through someone’s garbage, wondering what it’ll tell you about the person. While listening, I have to wonder what prompted that off-key Irving Berlin rendition, or inspired those high school students to cover Cream. It’s all very surreal and pretty funny and I think I may have found a new addiction for 2003.
