Late Night Movie Madness

Being the kung-fu movie nut that I am, it really bothers me when I see Disney buying up all of these great movies (Fist of Legend, My Father Is A Hero) and then dubbing and cutting them to pieces, with seemingly no respect for fans of the genre. And what’s more, they prevent fans from getting the original, untouched versions (as with Shaolin Soccer, to name but one).

That’s why this site is so cool. I remember when Disney was going release a dubbed-only version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke on DVD, and the uproar it caused among fans was enough to get them to change their minds. Hopefully, it’ll happen again.

And speaking of Miyazaki, Midnight Eye has a review of his latest film, Spirited Away, and an interview with the man himself. The review makes me want to see this movie all that much more, and the interview just confirms in my mind that Miyazaki is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today. His views on art, imagination, and his responsibility as a filmmaker are both inspiring and challenging. A lot of people responsible for so-called “family movies” could learn a thing or two from the master.
