Enjoy Your Rabbit For Strings

A lot of the praise has been heaped on Sufjan Stevens’ “50 States” albums, and deservedly so. But I think a lot of people tend to overlook 2001’s Enjoy Your Rabbit, Stevens’ foray into electronica and Chinese zodiac appreciation.

But not everyone has forgotten about Enjoy Your Rabbit. Earlier this year, at the MusicNOW festival, a string quartet reinterpreted two pieces from Enjoy Your Rabbit. First is “Year of the Ox,” and the string version makes Stevens’ love for Steve Reich’s compositions incredibly obvious. Second is “Year of the Boar,” which is rather short and clearly a transition into another piece, what with the banjo strains at the end.
