Elsewhere, 5/7

I was thinking of writing a snarky review of Spider-Man 3 but this post on Arts&Faith says it all.

Remember when Highlander was so freaking cool? Leave it to anime to salvage the franchise. Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, The Animatrix: “Program”) is working on a new Highlander movie and you can watch a few (NSFW) clips here.

Jang Joon-hwan — the mad genius behind Save the Green Planet, one of my all-time fave Korean films — is finally making a new movie. It’s not his rumored Fartman project, but a sequel to War of Flowers, one of the most successful Korean films of all time.

Watch the new video for Low’s “Belarus,” the second video from Drums And Guns.

Peter Hook Pretty Much Confirms New Order’s Demise.

Just a quick reminder: Rumskib’s self-titled debut (my review) comes out tomorrow, as does new discs from The Clientele, Bjork, and Lisa Gerrard.

Stop the presses! A recent Indiana University study finds that Bill O’Reilly is prone to inject fear into his commentaries and quick to resort to name-calling. Interesting factoid: The IU researchers found that O’Reilly called a person or a group a derogatory name once every 6.8 seconds, on average, or nearly nine times every minute during the editorials that open his program each night.

Rod Dreher on media violence, “torture porn,” and more: “We have learned to expand our understanding of the normative to include art that exalts things that ought to be repugnant to those who love life. In so doing, we teach ourselves to embrace death, or at least to remain indifferent to its putrid presence.”

Darren Hughes has posted a few capsule reviews from his viewings at SFIFF 2007, including The Island and Paprika.

First Harry Knowles, and now AICN’s Moriarty raves about Stardust, the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fairytale: “Burn-out is certainly a consideration in a summer of sequels, and what is so nice about Stardust is how it tells a story that doesn’t seem to have a franchise in mind… it’s just a damn good story.” Alright, screw the trailer — I want to see this movie now!

Is it wrong that I find the trailer for Rush Hour 3 as funny as I do?
