Coming to Lincoln: The Secret of Kells, The Good, The Bad, The Weird & Mother

Just as the title says, three highly anticipated films — by me, anyways — will be making their way to The Ross in late spring/early summer.

First up is The Secret of Kells, the Academy Award-nominated animated feature that depicts a young Irish boy who must team up with a young fairy girl to complete a magical book in the face of mysterious invaders. My Filmwell colleague N. K. Carter raved about this film back in early March, calling it “a movie full to bursting with the pure potential of animation, an aesthetic experience so impeccably designed that style and substance are indistinguishable”.

The Secret of Kells will be showing Friday, May 14 to Thursday, May 27.

Then, the Ross will be home to a Korean double-header, showing both The Good, The Bad, The Weird and Mother from Friday, June 4 to Thursday, June 17. The Good, The Bad, The Weird is Kim Ji-woon’s take on the “spaghetti western” genre, and is supposed to one wild, wacky ride. And, given that Kim is one of Korea’s best stylists — his previous films include A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life — it’s a pretty safe bet that the film is going to look amazing.

And then there’s Mother, the latest from what is probably my favorite Korean director right now, Bong Joon-ho. The Ross showed Bong’s The Host a few years back, so it’s nice to see them featuring his latest film. And speaking of which, Mother has been receiving countless accolades that call it a modern noir masterpiece.
