“Anyways” by Winter’s Fall

Earlier this year, Velvet Blue Music released the excellent debut album from Seryn, and now they’ve just released At All Angles, the latest album from Berkeley’s Winter’s Fall. The quintet term their music as “western/sci-fi”, which actually makes sense when you give a track like “Anyways” a spin.

On the one hand, you’ve got Peter Stanley’s thick, yearning drawl reminiscent of classic My Morning Jacket as well as plenty of twang courtesy of Jody Clarke’s pedal steel. On the other hand, there’s the group’s implementation of ethereal synths and soaring, space-bound guitars. On paper, it shouldn’t work, but the incongruity is what makes the song so special. Well, that and those searing guitars that launch into the stratosphere shortly after the 3:40 mark.

You can download the track courtesy of Magnet, or watch the video below.

I’ve also embedded a short “making of” documentary concerning At All Angles below.

Yes, I’d say that 2011 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for Velvet Blue Music.
