Cornerstone 1999: Jason’s Diary, June 28

Asylum cornerstone 1999 1
The Asylum

The summary for this day is going to be pretty short, because I’m sure you don’t want to read all about my exciting trip down Highway 2 in southern Iowa. My friend Shiloh and I had stopped in Omaha on the way to to stop by my cousin’s wedding reception on Sunday and had crashed at my parent’s house. Unlike last year, the trip out to Bushnell was fairly uneventful.

Basically, we rolled into Bushnell in the early evening, around 6:00 or so. We soon met our neighbors fairly quickly. Like a reminder of last year, it soon started raining. Quickly setting up camp, I ran over to help our neighbors keep their tent from flying away. Turns out they were from Massachusetts, and had been riding in the van that we followed into the campgrounds.

Two super nice families, the Smiths and the Gillys, became our neighbors and surrogate clan during the next week. It was nice to have surrogate mothers for a little while and they were incredibly gracious to a bunch of nutty kids from the Cornhusker state.

After making sure that nothing was soaked and that everything was staked down, I set out to find one of the main reasons for coming to Cornerstone: the Asylum. Put together by people from XNetGoth, the Velvet Empire, Deus Albedo, Flaming Fish, and assorted others, the Asylum was a place for Christian goths to hang out.

Now, I’m not exactly a goth — I’m into the music more than anything — but I’ve met and chatted and hung out with these groups, and consider them all to be some of my closest friends. I knew that, since it was only Monday, I wouldn’t see very many people. However, I did see Joe, Stephanie, Josh, and Lisa, some of the main instigators of the Asylum. After hanging out there for a little bit, I putzed around the campground for a little bit before calling it a night.
